Legionnaire News

From Your Commander

UNITE or UNITY-Webster defines it as the ability to join or put together to accomplish a goal.

On Monday Sept.15 as the news of Isabel was coming in I was becoming very concerned as to whether or not to cancel the SAL Crab Feast and it only grew worse as the week progressed. Many conversations were held with Mike Clutz and myself and even more negative factors kept rolling in. On Thursday Isabel rolled in and out, on Friday our SAL Squadron, several legionnaires and yes even some of our auxiliary members were here to clean up the grounds, put up tents, move picnic tables and several other tasks associated with putting on an affair, our biggest of the year. To make matters even worse we still had no electricity, lost on Thursday afternoon. No problem, Mike Helm our Judge Advocate had a generator he graciously let us use to provide power to our refrigerators and give us lighting to the kitchen. Why light in the kitchen, so Ronnie and Rosemary could prepare food and that delicious crab soup we all enjoyed. They were here all night for us. We cannot thank them enough for their dedication. The big day, so much more work still to be done and so little time, in come the reserves, these are people who do not normally do work around the Post unless asked. I should ask more often, for they surely did work.. Conclusion - THE CRAB FEAST WAS A HUGE SUCCESS, and yes we do have UNITY at Post 175.

A BIG THANK YOU FROM THE COMMANDER TO ALL THAT HELPED WITH THIS EVENT AND THOSE WHO SUPPORTED IT WITH TICKET purchaseS.

Around the Post, not much has been happening, several hall rentals, thank you Pat Wachter. A new legion sign has been put up at the entrance way to the Post, thanks to the Auxiliary Unit. Work has started on the new office upstairs, more info to follow in the next newsletter. As Commander I attended two Anne Arundel County Council meetings, one Dept. Executive Committee meeting and two Southern Maryland Youth Camp meetings.

Being done as always,

GOD BLESS AMERICA

THANKS TO EACH AND EVERY VETERAN.

REMEMBER THOSE WHO ARE SERVING TODAY IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS

Buddy George

Commander

Message From the 1st Vice

The second renewal notices for 2004 were sent out by National Headquarters the first week in September. If you received a notice and have already paid your 2004 dues disregard, but if you have not paid your dues, please do so now. The Post is at 71% of the Department goal for 2004. The Post goal is to have all post members "Early Birds" by the first of the New Year.

The Early Bird Bull and Oyster Roast is on 8 November. Early Bird tickets are on sale now, cost $20.00 for Early Bird members and $25.00 for all others. Doors open at 1pm. Food will be served from 1pm until 4pm "Family Tradition" will play music from 2pm until 6pm. A reminder only, Early Bird members can get tickets until 26 Oct, after the 26th ticket sales will open to all members. A great time will be had by all.

THANKS to all that attended and helped with our Patriot Day ceremony [9/11].

Remember all our service members serving our country in your prayers.

Daniel McDonald

1st Vice

Message From the Adjutant

The post activities are many and there are many officers and volunteers who support them.

Thanks to Dan Jordan, 2nd Vice Commander of the Post, for managing the community picnic.

In spite of a rainy start, the sun came out and the kids had fun in the mud puddles and played on the moon bounce. Thanks to all who supported Dan during rainy and windy conditions to setup the tents, and prepare food.

The crab feast was a huge success due to the leadership displayed by Mike Clutz, SAL Commander, and due to Dan Jordan, the SAL 2nd Vice Commander. There were numerous volunteers from the SAL, Ladies Auxiliary, and Legion supporting this event. Thanks Y’all!

Our Legion membership chairman Dan McDonald, who is our 1st Vice Commander, has been performing an outstanding job. He also is in charge of the annual Bull and Oyster Roast. Please offer your support to him on this upcoming event. There are always plenty of small tasks to go around that are not too taxing.

Remember the old but true saying, " Behind a good man there is a good woman? " We have many women of the Ladies Auxiliary who volunteer for most all of the post events. You may recognize them by the name of Pat, Barbara, Michele, Suzie, Rosemary, Kathy, Stacy, Eva, Phyllis, Linda, and the list goes on and on…Thank you Ladies for making us men look good.

Thanks to Mike and Gail Helm for their support including post events; but particularly their post computer support. They develop and maintain the post WEB site "legionpost175.org" and perform system upgrades consistent with the goals of the Legion, SAL, and Ladies Auxiliary.

Thanks to Jim Corkery, Post Service Officer, and our post newsletter publisher. He works efficiently with all three organizations to merge information for each newsletter. Jim provides a copy of the newsletter to Gail Helm, our post webmaster to present on the post WEB site. So anyone in the world can view our WEB page and our newsletter. We hope that you will elect the option to view the news from the Internet WEB page in lieu of a hard copy in order to save post money for stationary and postage. This option is available now.

As always, we appreciate your written comments and suggestions placed in the box in the post lounge. I monitor the box for them regularly.

Think about scheduling a hall rental for your parties. Our prices are very affordable and our large list of options will surely meet any requirement you may have.

We hope you and your families have weathered the recent storms with minimal problems. I hope you keep watch for our elderly and those who may need assistance during these extraordinary times.

We Will Never Forget. Thanks to all who participated in and attended the September 11

Commemoration Ceremony. It was especially appropriate to have Firefighter Chuck Austin, President of the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Department, ring the "Four Fives" and participate in laying the wreath in memory of all those whose lives were lost on that terrible attack on our country. Ringing of the "Four Fives" is the Fire Department signal for the death of a firefighter.

We must never forget that we live in a world where there are fanatics who hate our country and all it has accomplished, both here and around the world.

Fellow Legionnaires Raymond J. Sheedy, Jr. (PUFL) and Bruce E. Hartt have been called to Post Everlasting since our last newsletter. Please remember them and their families in your prayers.

Many thanks to Rick Digby and Dan McDonald for volunteering and giving blood in September. The next blood drive will be the third Monday in December the 15th. Donated blood is especially important during the winter holidays when accidents go up and donors are in short supply. If you can’t give, perhaps a member of your family, friends, or business associates can. Every pint of blood given can benefit up to three people in need of life saving plasma, platelets, or serum. Please give the gift of life by signing up on the bulletin board near the front door.

On November 11th at 11 am we will recognize and honor all that have served our nation in the armed services. Please plan to attend this very meaningful ceremony that honors all veterans. Remember all the men and women in uniform who are in harm’s way each day fighting the war on terrorism. As we remember their predecessors, we honor and remember them, too. As usual, the Auxiliary will provide a light lunch following the ceremony.

Please let me know of anyone in the hospital or ill at home. Thanks.

News from our Auxiliary

From the President

Congratulations to the SAL for a successful crab feast. A good time was had by all despite the effects from Hurricane Isabel.

Welcome back Breakfast Crew! Many people without power from the storm were happy to find us up and running.

Fall is upon us and so is football season. Our Souper Sundays are back for the months of October and November. A sign up sheet is posted in the lounge.

The SAL 50’s Dance is October 25 followed by the Children’s Halloween Party on October 26. The Early Bird Bull and Oyster Roast is November 8 and don’t forget Veteran’s Day on November 11. There will also be a Thanksgiving Day Dinner with all the trimmings.

There is much to be thankful for at this time. The effects from Hurricane Isabel were felt by many. Thank you to all the men and women who worked around the clock to restore electric power and who manned emergency services. Also to neighbors who worked together to help each other get needed supplies and clean up the debris.

Our system of government works because we are a free people. Free to help others in need and free to fight injustices in the world. Remember our Veterans living and dead and honor them on Veterans Day!

Keep our service men and women in your thoughts and prayers as they go about their duties preserving freedom throughout the world!

Pat Rabeau

President

Chaplain's Message

With the passing of the second year anniversary of the September 11th tragedy, I am reminded of a quote of scripture that George Bush shared with America on that day. "Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted". He also said, "we will persevere through this national tragedy and personal loss. In time, we will find healing and recovery; and, in the face of all this evil, we will remain strong and unite, "One Nation Under God". It is important that we continue to pray for those that have lost loved ones to bring them peace and strength.

We’ve had quite a few birthdays, Happy Birthday to all of those who have had birthdays! Since our last newsletter we have had 48!

I would love to be informed of members that are ill or home bound so that I can send a card, visit, or give them a call. You can call me at home, leave a message at the Legion or with Pat Rabeau, or you can email me. My home phone number is (410) 315-8349, and my email address at home is almnsam@aol.com.

Peace and May God Bless Us All,

.Stacey Milot

Membership

How are all our "dancers" doing? Remember that we are called the "Mexican Hat Dancers" as part of the Southern Maryland District. Membership has really slowed down in the past few weeks. The end of the year will soon be here and your dues must be paid for 2004 to keep you in good standing. Dues are only $13.00 for Seniors and $3.00 for Juniors. The Early bird Bull and Oyster Roast will be held on Nov. 8th and all paid up members get in for a reduced price.

Welcome to our new members: June Radler, Maxine Mikolajewski and Junior (Madalyn Schmidt).

I hope to hear from lots of our members who want to pay their dues for 2004.

National Convention 2003

St. Louis, Missouri

The American Legion Auxiliary held their 83rd National Convention, August 22-28, 2003. It was an honor for me to attend as a delegate for the Department of Maryland and as a National Page for our Department President Deanna Purdy.

I was able to participate in a variety of activities during the week; including National committee meetings, divisional caucuses and the nomination of officers, and to march in the parade held on Sunday carrying the U.S. flag. During the meetings we had Veterans Affairs; Chely Wright, musician and the Auxiliary’s 2003 Woman of the Year. President George W. Bush addressed the American Legion and Auxiliary on Tuesday, August 26th. I also attended the Past Presidents luncheon on Tuesday and the National States Dinner held on Wednesday evening.

Our National President is Katherine Morris from Texas and our own "Sandi Dutton" from Greenbelt Unit 136 is National Vice President.

It was a very busy week but a very enjoyable one for me.

SAL News

Commander’s Message

The annual SAL Crab Feast was held on September 20th. If you weren’t there you missed a GREAT time, ask your friends who were there. Even Mother Nature couldn’t stop us.

Family Tradition supplied the music for the Feast and sounded great as usual. Afterwards a large number of the attendees drifted into the lounge to enjoy the music of Doo Wop Jack who always does a great job of entertaining the folks. He did not disappoint the ‘standing room only’ crowd. The audience must have enjoyed their day since there was a good number still there when Jack was finishing for the night.

I would like to thank everyone individually, but the list would be too long and I would hate to leave anyone out. Let me just take a moment to say "Thank You All" to the Legion, Auxiliary and SAL members who were there when you were needed. Without your help this event would not have been the success it was. I must say this was by far the best SAL sponsored event I have attended in a long time.

Once again thanks to all of you.

We will be having a 50’s Dance with Doo Wop Jack on October 25th from 8 to 12 midnight in the Post Hall. Tickets will be $10.00, which includes draft beer and sodas. So ladies, put on your poodle skirt, men dress in your best fifties garb and join us for another good time.

Mike Clutz

Commander

If you would like to join the "crew" with a helping hand, or a donation for our "sweet table", please contact Pat Kloes at 410-647-3756.

Souper Sunday

Fans, fans and more football fans are what is needed for our Soup for Sunday this year.

We have a starting line-up with Paula, our main Quarterback. She will "Quardinate" fun and sideline entertainment from 2 until 5PM for nine glorious Sundays.

We are looking for more volunteers to make their special dish. This should not be hard. The Legion has lots of great cooks that love football and friends that would love the chance to show their stuff.

Please contact Paula Fuller with your specialty and date availability. We will post the information as soon as the list is complete.

Bingo

Go Ravens!

Ravens Roost #33, which meets at the Post, invites

Post members who are football fans to join the Roost. It is one of 50 Roosts that work together to promote football and local charities in addition to cheering for the Ravens. Roost members have fun watching the games, but we enjoy other activities throughout the year. We hold our annual convention in Ocean City. In February, members participate in a bull roast that is attended by Brian Billick and Ravens players. Membership dues are $15.00 per year plus a $15.00 Initiation fee. For more information, please call Dave Schultz at 410-757-5505 or Lil Ellis at 410-757-7924.
