From Your Commander

Many fine things have been happening here at the Post, inside and out. They are so numerous I cannot begin to list them all. August was a slow month

for events, but  maintenance  around the Post was spectacular.  Bushes were trimmed, light electrical work was performed, trash was hauled away, etc. All efforts were aimed at giving the Post a better look.  Hopefully many more tasks will be completed in the near future but only with the help and time of each and every member.  In August, if you were here on a Friday night, you may have noticed we are running a 50-50, the proceeds of  this 50-50 are going into a fund to purchase chairs for the hall.  If you would like to make a donation to this fund we would greatly appreciate it.  So much for comments on August.

September started off with a bang and lots of hard work and time by many members of all organizations. The Community Picnic was a huge success. Thanks to Richard Bonnett  for his  planning and the work done by his helpers.  A job well done. I would also like to mention our terrific Service in memory of and tribute to our 9-11 Victims and Heroes.  Another task well done by Dale Strait and his helpers.  Let us not forget the Ladies of  our Auxiliary for the fine refreshments afterwards. As I am writing this I hope you will receive it before the  SAL Crab Feast if not let me say anyhow that I am sure a great time was had by all who attended this event.  Thanks to the SAL and all their helpers.

On my last note let me say “GOD BLESS AMERICA” and “GOD BLESS ALL VETERANS OF AMERICA”.

WE ARE THE GREATEST.

Commander

Message From the 1st Vice

As your membership chairperson, you know you will always get a pitch about dues from me. But to be honest we are doing very well. The Department of Maryland [higher headquarters] has established a goal of 629 members for our Post for 2003; we are at 62% of our goal. We need your help in reaching our goal of 629 members by 1 January 2003.

In the last newsletter I missed one of our Life Members who has 50 years of continuous membership in The American Legion. CONGRATULATIONS to RAYMOND J. ARTHUR JR.

Tickets for  the Bull and Oyster Roast are on sale now.  Only Early Bird members can get tickets from now until 23 Oct.  After  the 23rd , ticket sales will open to all others. Cost of tickets is  $17.00 for Early Bird members and  $20.00 for all others.

THANK YOU AUXILIARY. Over the past year a lot of work has been done in the Post hall. With just one more major thing that has to be done, CHAIRS FOR THE HALL. We have started a fund to replace the old chairs in the hall. And our Auxiliary has donated $2000.00 to the fund. Anyone wishing to buy a chair for the hall can do so by donating $20.00. Your name will be put on the back of the chair and it’s a great way to support your post.

Message From the 2st Vice

The Manhattan Beach Community Picnic was held on September 7th and there were about 220 members of MBCA and Post 175 in attendance.   The weather was perfect and the volunteers who made it happen were there in good numbers from both organizations.  Our Post volunteers essentially set up the event tents and picnic tables and provided food and equipment support to the MBCA.

The American Legion Post 175, Very Important Persons [VIP’s] helping out to install tents, move heavy picnic tables, get food, flip burgers, roll hot dogs, etc...Were:

Rick Digby, Joe White, Robert [Gil]bertson,

Jimmy Swing, Billy Cox, Jerry Heath, Keith

Jordan, Dan Jordan, Dan McDonald, Buddy

George, Tony McGrath,  Harry Carroll, and the

     ‘Post Rugby Team’.

On the day of the event, Chris Marsala’s MBCA Team moved in to operate many games; paint faces; hold contests and manage the days activities.  Chris’  team worked well together to return the post grounds to it’s original condition with all tents and equipment back to their storage homes. It was a pleasure to complete this chore on the same day  so that Sunday would be a full day of rest for all.

In conclusion, thanks to the volunteers of American Legion Post 175 and the MBCA who made this day so special.   The good teamwork demonstrated on this event is appreciated and noticed by many in the communities where we live.  A hand salute to all that made it happen!

From Your Adjutant

All members must obey the post 175 dress code (no tank tops or bare feet), also please remember, no use of profanity is requested of everyone always.  Violators will be asked to leave.

As a point of information, although the bartender is in control of the lounge, ALL members are empowered and expected to help enforce these and all other rules, remember to take it to the bartender before taking any action.

Halloween will  be here at the end of October.  In view of incidents that we all have read or heard in the news media in the past, remember to take special care to use common sense with your children during this time as well as at all other times.  Make Halloween a safe and fun night.

Adjutant

A Word from the Chaplain

I’m sorry to report that Legionnaires John N.(JR) Hunt, Jr. and Edward Weidman have been called to Post Everlasting. Keep their families in your prayers.I extend my thanks to those Legionnaires who participated in the Memorial Services.

Many thanks to all who participated in and attended the 9/11 remembrance, especially Chuck Austin, President of the Early Heights Fire Company.  Chuck honored all fallen heros with the ringing of the Four Fives, a fire department tradition of long standing used to mark the passing of a firefighter on duty.  Legion Posts around the world paused on September 11th to remember all those who died on that horrific day in 2001.  This ceremony was the first of what will become an annual remembrance.  We will NEVER forget!

I was recently assigned to the Contributions Committee.  This committee was established to review the charitable gifts of the Post.  I have had an opportunity to review recent contributions and I am pleased to report that our Post has been most generous and helpful to the community.  Last year the Post contributed over $16 thousand to numerous local charities including Hospice of the Chesapeake, Salvation Army, Boys’ State, Make a Wish Foundation, Youth Camp, fire and police associations, youth scholarships, youth sports, churches and community associations.  If you know of a good local cause that needs support, let Post Treasurer Bob Niederstadt know.  And thank him for the good job he is doing.

Veterans’ Day is 11 November.  Your Post will be honoring veterans of all the wars at our annual Veterans’ Day ceremony at 11 a.m. in front of the flag pole followed by a light lunch.  Come join in.

Hope you had a great summer.

Please let me know of anyone in the hospital or ill at home.  Thanks.

News from our Auxiliary

From the President

Congratulations to all of our new Officers and Chairmen.  Many thanks to Southern Maryland District President Pat Rice for officiating at the installation and for those who provided the food afterwards.

I want to thank Pat Kloes, on behalf of our Unit, for her outstanding job as Unit President for the past three years.  She was innovative in developing Souper Sundays, “Window” Raffles, and the monthly breakfasts where Post, SAL, and Unit members work together to provide a well run

service.  Pat has consented to stay on as Breakfast Chairman and to help wherever needed.  Thank You Pat, for a job well done.

Upcoming events include the children’s Halloween, Christmas, and Easter parties.  Breakfast has already started and Souper Sundays start in October.

A St. Patrick’s Day Dinner and Texas Roundup (formerly known as Texas BBQ) are also being planned. The semi-annual Fund Raiser  is in full swing. Call  me at 410-544-2421 for tickets.

It is through your support of our Unit programs that we are able to contribute generously to the Post and to our regular Auxiliary programs.  We appreciate the efforts put forth by all of you..

Thanks to the hard work of our unit members, we were able to contribute $2000 to the Post for the purchase of one hundred chairs for the hall.

Please continue to support the Post and SAL in their efforts as it takes all of us working together to reach our goals and have a successful year.

Please take note that due to our regularly scheduled December meeting falling on Christmas Day, there will be NO MEETING IN DECEMBER.

.

Pat Rabeau

President

1st Vice-President

Thank you for allowing me the privilege to serve as your First Vice-President for 2002-2003. I’m looking forward to working with President Pat Rabeau and all of the newly elected officers of the Unit. If I can be of assistance to anyone in any way, do not hesitate to call me.

As most of you know, the Auxiliary has a cake wheel at some of the Legion, SAL, and Auxiliary functions.  This is just one of our many profit making functions.

I hope you will respond to the call and donate a cake when called upon.  Try to remember to label your cakes with your name and type of cake. It would be nice to thank those who donate.

Thanks for your co-operation and “Happy Baking”.

Betty Gentile

1st Vice-President

 2nd Vice-President

As I start my term as 2nd Vice I’d just like to say “thanks, it’s great to be back”.  I would also like to thank Michele Jordan for the great job she has done this past year and that I look forward to working with her this year.

We have a lot going on this year, with the children’s parties, breakfast, St. Patrick’s Day and of course, the always successful Texas Roundup.  I hope I can count on all of you to volunteer for our upcoming functions.  We need your help if we’re to be successful!!!

AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY

82nd Annual National Convention

August 23-29, 2002

Charlotte Convention Center

Charlotte, North Carolina

It was an honor to serve as a delegate for the State of Maryland.  It was a very busy week as I was a member of the National Glee Club, attended and had to report on the Pre-convention VA&R meeting, and I attended all sessions held at the Convention Center.  Our parade on Sunday was cancelled due to rain.  On Thursday, the Installation of National Officers for 2002-2003 was held with National President Elsie Bailey being installed.

It was a week of many meetings with lots to do, but most important is the valuable information you come away with.
