From
Election Committee
This year we tried something new for the election of
officers. Election day was May 10, 2003
from 1200 to 1900 hours. Out of over 600
members, only 45 members voted. To those
45 members - “Thank You”. If you didn’t
care for the members running for office you had a month to nominate someone of
your choice. You also had the chance to
vote for your choice at the election by using the “write in” option on the
election ballot.
A lot of work and time was put into this election. To say the resulting turnout was
disappointing would be an understatement.
To the members that volunteered their time on Election Day, I
thank you!!

From
Your Commander
Well, one year has gone by and here I am again one for another. Politics, you gotta love em. That being said let’s moves on. I first of all would like to thank each and everyone who helped me in anyway. Physically, mentally, verbally or just for the hell of it, not knowing what they were doing. It has been a good and fulfilling year for the Post and me. Many improvements and changes have been made at the Post, (too numerous to list here). Hopefully many more will be accomplished this year as I command and lead once more with help and support from our membership.
I
personally would like to invite all members to attend the June general
membership meeting. At this meeting the
new officers will be installed into their respective offices.
Don’t
forget the Department convention will be held from July 8th through
July 13th in Ocean City, Maryland.
Hope to see some of you there.
For
those of you that missed it the Memorial Day Service it was the best yet. We had Dave Dulin taking pictures and will be
publishing them in the near future. Stop
by the Post bulletin board and take an admiring look.

Message
From the 1st Vice
The
membership year for 2003 is about to close and I must report that The Post will
not even make 3 star much less 4 star. We
will miss our goal by about 15 members. Last year we had 629 members for 2002,
41 members did not renew for 2003. The good news is we had 30 new members for
2003. I will try to do a better job in 2004, as your membership chairman.
Thanks
to all of you who voted for me as your 1st Vice Commander. Hopefully
we will reach all the membership goals for 2004. I will need your help to make
our goal of every member being an Early Bird. You should be receiving your
renewal notices around the 1st of July.
Membership numbers are our voice in Congress.
1st Vice
Message From the 2st Vice
I
will be installed to Post Adjutant position at the June Legion meeting and
Dan
Jordan will be installed to 2nd Vice Commander. Please provide support to Dan
in his new position.
I
wish to thank all of the post members for the support they have given me this
year on various projects.
This
coming year I will be monitoring the suggestion box. Please submit your suggestions and comments
and complaints. I will reply to all
ASAP.
Thanks
again for your support.

Post 175, along with the rest of the country,
observed Memorial Day on Monday, 26 May, at 11 am in the Post hall. Thanks to all who participated in this
service to remember those who have given their lives in the defense and
preservation of our freedoms.
Fellow Legionnaires Maurice Reynolds (a 50 year
member) and Leonard T Corcoran (a life member) have been called to Post
Everlasting since our last newsletter.
Please remember them and their families in your prayers, especially
Kathy Beale, daughter of Comrade Leonard.
Thanks to Rick Digby and Dan McDonald who signed up
to give blood at the 2 June Blood Drive.
Post 175 joins with the Severn River Lions Club and Elks Lodge in these
blood drives every three months to give the gift of life. Every pint of blood given can benefit up to
three people in need of life saving plasma, platelets, or serum. Please sign up for the next drive in
September.
Enjoy your summer vacations and drive safely.
Please let me know of anyone in the hospital or ill
at home. Thanks.

A bingo was held
on April 21st. We had eleven
volunteers help twenty-five residents play bingo. Cup cakes and soda were served. We can always use prizes such as stuffed
animals, deodorants, powder, jewelry, and items for men. On May 14th, Future Care held a Volunteer
Dinner for members who helped this past year.
Several of our members attended.
Ladies, thank you
very much for your hard work and dedication you gave to the residents at Future
care this past year. I know they really
look forward to seeing us every month.
Girls State will
be held the week of June 15 to 20, 2003 at Frostburg College. The Unit will sponsor four students from
Severna Park High School: Sarah Dawney,
Colleen Fischer, Michelle White, and Arielle Whitaker.
Perry Point V.A. Hospital held its annual clothing bazaar on April 19th,
2003. Thanks to everyone who donated
clothes for this event. The Veterans
look forward to this every year. There
were two hundred Veterans who attended this affair. Many left with several bags of much needed
clothing.

Memorial Day Poppy Drive
What
a success our annual poppy drive was!!
Our total donations to the Veterans will be over $1350. My thanks to all for the generous donations!!
The
program started out with the poppy dedication displays in the lounge. This began on May 1st, which is
the traditional start of “Poppy Month”.
The program was very successful with a total of $298.50 in
donations. This was more than double
that of last year! The unfortunate
passing of Leonard Corcoran initiated many significant donations. Our condolences go to Kathy Beall and her
family.
Memorial
Day, Monday May 26 started out to be a rainy day so the Memorial Day service
was held in the banquet hall. It was a
very moving service, with almost 100 people attending. Many more donations were received just before
the service. After the service, the American Legion Auxiliary served a
wonderful luncheon. And of course
Michele did a wonderful job bartending for such a large crowd!
Now
it was time for those who volunteered to hit the local grocery stores and
highways to collect more donations. Dan
McDonald and Carl (Buddy) George manned the College Parkway intersection. Pat Rabeau and Barbara Mallone covered the
Annapolis commissary. Harry (Saint)
Carroll collected donations at the Arnold Safeway. Jerry Heath and Robert (Gil) Gilbertson
worked the Arnold Super Fresh. Finally,
Dave Cantler and myself were stationed at Graul’s in Cape St. Claire. Everybody worked hard and my thanks goes to
everybody for making this year’s poppy drive such a success!!! And many thanks to all of you for your
generous donations!!
I
look forward to an even more successful program next year!!

NOTICE
Internet Access
Post WEB Page is coming
The Post has initiated an
effort to get a Post 175 Internet web page set up in the near future.
We have seen a demonstration of a sample of what the Web page MAY look like when we initially launch it.
The demonstration was given to each of the Post organizations at their respective general meetings. The reports back from each organization were very positive.
This will make a lot more information about what is
going on around the Post available to more members in a much more timely
manner.
E-mail and
Internet Access.
Please remember
the Post E-mail is intended for Post business.
This includes any correspondence requesting information from the Post or
to notify the Post of information.
When sending e-mail to the Post please include in the
subject line the following:
Attention of: Name
or Officer position
Your Name
Brief description of subject
We have been requesting notification of E-mail addresses
for about a year or more in each issue of the Newsletter. So far we have received 37 responses. We are looking at this as a way of cutting
costs in distribution and copying of the Newsletters. The savings would amount to approximately
$250.00 per month.
If you have an E-mail address and would be willing to
receive your copy of the Newsletter through E-mail please send in your e-mail
address. This should also eliminate the
“lost in the mail” newsletters that occasionally get reported.
The sooner we get this information the sooner we can have
two way electronic communication between the Post and membership. We need your help to start preparing NOW.
Please submit (E-mail, Regular mail, phone, or give it to
the bartender)
