Legionnaire News
The Post ended the year on a very good note. The annual charity luncheon was a huge success, which allowed the post to donate Christmas baskets to 14 families. A big thanks goes to our chairman Reed Brown and everyone who worked and donated to the event. Our Post Xmas party was great and the Santa surprise was interesting. Your Auxiliary President along with myself and Santa Clause [Jim Corkery] visited veterans at Future Care. Each veteran received a Christmas card and a small donation from the Post. Our New Years Eve Gala followed that event. All had a good time.
The Department of Maryland sponsors different causes throughout the year. The Post has through your generosity donated to United Cerebral Palsy of Southern Maryland and to Epilepsy. Thanks to all who gave.
As you can see the Post is doing everything we can to support the goals of the American Legion. There is still something we can do. There is a need for Phone cards that our wounded serviceman could use to call home while they rehab in the hospital. There is a jar in the post lounge if anyone wants to donate a phone card.
Really big thanks to our AUXILIARY who have purchased and installed a new water heater in the hall.
At the January, General Membership meeting there was a discussion about the increase in dues that the Department of Maryland is asking for. The Department has not had an increase in 14 years and they have tried to cut cost. They now say they can not cut more and have asked for a $2.00 increase starting with the 2006 dues year. During the discussion it was noted that the post has not had a dues increase since 1986. It was also discussed that we do not know what National will be doing in the next couple years as far as dues are concerned. A motion was made to raise the post dues to $26.00 per year. The Motion passed. Effective with the 2006 dues the post dues will be $26.00. [1 July 2005]
Remember all our service members serving around the world and at home in your prayers.

Message From the 1st Vice
I am sorry to say that we did not obtain enough renewals from the membership, to get our Commander the Outstanding Commanders Cap Award for 2005. I am happy to be able to say we are well on our way to getting a first place award at the Oyster Bowl for Southern Maryland District. Also we are not that far off from obtaining Four Star Status for the Post. As always, everyone’s help is needed to obtain goals, feel free to jump in at any time by calling a member who hasn’t yet paid his or her dues this year. If possible sign up a new member and help the Post grow. I thank every member who has paid his or her dues for 2005.
It has been brought to my attention that crow wings are almost as good as chicken wings. Let’s hope so.

Message from the Adjutant
We often hear complaints around the Post, which I’m sure is normal for any organization. It does though seem that the people that complain the most are the same people that do the least. We need more volunteers.
Criticism is fine as long as it is “positive”, negativism will get us nowhere.
As one of our late Presidents once stated, It is all right to disagree, but do not be disagreeable”.
Let’s think about it.
George F. Jamar, SR.
Adjutant
Fellow Legionnaires, I’m sorry to report comrade Maynard Richard has been called to Post Everlasting. Please remember this fallen comrade and his family in your prayers.
Comrade John Ellis has been in and out of hospital again. He’s home and feeling better, but would appreciate hearing from friends. Bill Lindsey has been spotted in the lounge after a long illness. Good to have you back, Bill. Chic Danley has been in hospital but is back home. Be sure to give him a call or stop by and see him.
Please let me know of anyone in hospital or ill at home. Thanks.

Message From the Historian
Tomb of the Unknowns
at Arlington National Cemetery
The Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va., is also known as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and has never been officially named. The Tomb of the Unknowns stands atop a hill overlooking Washington, D.C. On March 4, 1921, Congress approved the burial of an unidentified American soldier from World War I in the plaza of the new Memorial Amphitheater. The white marble sarcophagus has a flat-faced form and is relieved at the corners and along the sides by neo-classic pilasters, or columns, set into the surface. Sculpted into the east panel, which faces Washington, D.C., are three Greek figures representing Peace, Victory, and Valor. Inscribed on the back of the Tomb are the words:
HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERICAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD
The Tomb sarcophagus was placed above the grave of the Unknown Soldier of World War I. West of the World War I Unknown are the crypts of unknowns from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Those three graves are marked with white marble slabs flush with the plaza.
The Unknown of World War I
On Memorial Day, 1921, four unknowns were exhumed from four World War I American cemeteries in France. U.S. Army Sgt. Edward F. Younger, who was wounded in combat, highly decorated for valor and received the Distinguished Service Medal in "The Great War, the war to end all wars," selected the Unknown Soldier of World War I from four identical caskets at
the city hall in Chalons-sur-Marne, France, Oct. 24, 1921. Sgt. Younger selected the unknown by placing a spray of white roses on one of the caskets. He chose the third casket from the left. The chosen Unknown Soldier was transported to the United States aboard the USS Olympia. Those remaining were interred in the Meuse Argonne Cemetery, France. The Unknown Soldier lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda from his arrival in the United States until Armistice Day, 1921. On Nov. 11, 1921, President Warren G. Harding officiated at the interment ceremonies conducted at the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery.
The Unknown of World War II and Korea
On Aug. 3, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a bill to select and pay tribute to the unknowns of World War II and Korea. The selection ceremonies and the interment of these unknowns took place in 1958. The World War II Unknown was selected from remains exhumed from cemeteries in Europe, Africa, Hawaii and the Philippines.
Two unknowns from World War II, one from the European Theater and one from the Pacific Theater, were placed in identical caskets and taken aboard the USS Canberra, a guided-missile cruiser resting off the Virginia capes. Navy Hospitalman 1st Class William R. Charette, then the Navy's only active-duty Medal of Honor recipient, selected the Unknown Soldier of World War II. The remaining casket received a solemn burial at sea. Four unknown Americans who died in the Korean War were disinterred from the National Cemetery of the Pacific in Hawaii. Army Master Sgt. Ned Lyle made the final selection. Both caskets arrived in Washington May 28, 1958, where they lay in the Capitol Rotunda until May 30. That morning, they were carried on caissons to Arlington National Cemetery. President Eisenhower awarded each the Medal of Honor, and the Unknowns were interred in the plaza beside their of World War I comrade.
The Unknown of Vietnam
Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Maj. Allan Jay Kellogg Jr. designated the Unknown service member from the Vietnam War during a ceremony at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, May 17, 1984. The Vietnam Unknown was transported aboard the USS Brewton to Alameda Naval Base, Calif. The remains were sent to Travis Air Force Base, Calif., May 24. The Vietnam Unknown arrived at Andrews Air Force Base, MD the next day. Many Vietnam veterans and President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan visited the Vietnam Unknown in the U.S. Capitol. An Army caisson carried the Vietnam Unknown from the
Capitol to the Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day, May 28, 1984. President Reagan presided over the funeral, and presented the Medal of Honor to the Vietnam Unknown.
The president also acted as next of kin by accepting the interment flag at the end of the ceremony. The interment flags of all Unknowns at the Tomb of the Unknowns are on view in the Memorial Display Room. The Memorial Bridge leading from Washington, D.C., to Virginia is lined with a joint-service cordon as motor escort takes the remains of the Vietnam War Unknown to Arlington National Cemetery for interment in the Tomb of the Unknowns.
(The remains of the Vietnam Unknown were exhumed May 14, 1998. Based on mitochondria DNA testing, DoD scientists identified the remains as those of Air Force 1st Lt. Michael Joseph Blassie, who was shot down near An Loc, Vietnam, in 1972. It has been decided that the crypt that contained the remains of the Vietnam Unknown will remain vacant.)

News from our Auxiliary
It is my sad duty to announce the death of Past President Pat Kloes who passed away on January 10. She joined the Unit in 1996 under her father, Ollie Kloes, a WWII Veteran. Pat served as Sgt-At-Arms, Second Vice-President, and Unit President for three years. Her Chairmanships included Americanism (Essays), Field Service (Bingo), Co-Chair of the Fundraiser (Lottery), and Data Base Manager. She was also responsible for implementing new money making ideas such as Souper Sundays and Window Raffles that increased revenue and eliminated unnecessary work.
Her most loved and cherished work was as Breakfast Chairman for the Unit. The “Breakfast Crew” was proud to have worked with her. For the past six years, she managed the operation of the breakfasts with skill and energy as long as her health permitted. A special thanks to Pat Wachter and the rest of the “Crew” who stepped in to help as needed.
Pat was a very hard working individual for the Unit and the Post. She gave 100% of her time and energy.
The Unit bestowed an Honorary Life Membership on her in the spring of 2004 to honor her for her work.
To her friends around the Post, she was known affectionately as Little Pat, Patsy, or sometimes Skinny Pat. For those that knew her well, she had a dry sense of humor and a ready smile. Her presence will be very much missed.
We love ya, Pat, and bid you “Farewell” with the words from this Old Irish Verse:
May the road rise up to meet you—May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and the rains fall soft upon the fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His Hand.

Remembrances of a Good Friend of the Post
Pat Kloes
It saddens me to acknowledge the passing of Pat Kloes on Monday, January 10th, 2005. She slipped away quietly, as was her way. She was on a mission to enter those “Gates” before we realized she was gone. Pat was a quiet person in life, but always a great achiever. When she set her mind to do something, she gave it 100% and saw it through to its final conclusion. Her aim was to leave behind a better place than when she arrived. Her membership in the Auxiliary was a testimony to that fact. She was always willing to volunteer, especially when it came to the betterment of the Post.
As you all should know Pat was in charge of the monthly breakfast since it’s inception. She really loved the breakfast and felt it brought people together in camaraderie. Her love for the folks that volunteered as the “breakfast crew” goes without saying. She always did say they complemented each other and the success of the breakfast could only be attributed to the contribution of the entire “crew”. To the “crew”, I want to personally thank all of you for working extra hard and picking up the slack when Pat became unable to carry on.
Also, on behalf of Pat and her entire family, I would like to thank the Auxiliary for the fine food they provided for her wake. Barbara and Eric Smith outdid themselves in the preparation and presentation. Words fail me when it comes to expressing my gratitude to them. They are truly unique people. Also a special thanks for all their help goes to Linda Freedenberg, Linda DiPaula, Liz Richard, Paula Fuller, Michele Jordan and Kathy Beall. The various outpourings of sympathy should they be flowers, Mass cards, contributions or just plain old hugs have been uplifting and greatly appreciated.
Thank you – Thank God
For Pat Kloes.
Pat Wachter,
Hall Chairman
Goodbye Pat Kloes
It was with much sorrow that we said “Goodbye” to our Past President, Pat Kloes. She gave so much of herself in the three years that she served in the office of President of Severn Unit 175.
It was a pleasure to know her and work with her. She will be missed.
Past Presidents of Severn Unit 175.
