Message From Your Commander
Editors
note:
Due to the passing of a family member the Commander’s message will not
appear in this issue. Dan assures me he is looking forward to the coming year
as the Post 175 Commander. He also
welcomes any assistance that the membership can lend him in making it a very
successful year. Look to the next issue for some of Dan’s plans for the
upcoming year.
Message From the 1st Vice
As I tackle the
membership job this year I am looking forward to the difficult challenge of
obtaining FOUR STAR STATUS for the Post and our Commander. I will be doing
everything within my abilities to accomplish this task, but the ultimate
outcome will be from you the membership. There is no telling how many members
we will lose to Post Everlasting, minimal I hope, but these members must be
replaced and even more recruited if we are to obtain our goal of Four Stars,
therefore this year we will need to reach a membership of 632 to accomplish
this high honor, but I know with your help and my constant reminders it will be
done. THINK-RECRUIT-RECRUIT-RECRUIT. WE ARE THE FINEST
MILITARY ORGANIZATION IN TOWN.
Let’s not forget the EARLY BIRD BULL AND OYSTER
ROAST this year. It will be
held on Saturday the 13th of November from 1PM Until 6PM. Tickets
will go on sale September the 15th to Legion Early Bird Members until 1 October, then
they will be sold on a first come first serve basis. Hope to see you there.
The following is a little
Poem I picked up from a newspaper in
“Volunteer heaven”
Many will be shocked to find,
When the day of judgment
nears,
That there is a special place in heaven
Set aside for volunteers,
Furnished with big recliners,
Satin couches, and footstools,
Where there are no committee chairs,
No group leaders, no carpools,
Telephone lists will be outlawed,
But a finger snap will bring
Cool drinks and gourmet dinners
And rare feasts fit for a King.
You ask, who will serve these privileged few
And work for all they’re worth?
Why, all those who reaped the benefits and not once
volunteered on Earth!
Volunteers are the Lifeline of our organization
Step up and be known. Its Not A
Job-It’s an honor.
Carl “Buddy” George
1st Vice
Commander

Message From
the Historian
"Our Flag: Did you
know?"
Have
you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding
the American flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the 13
colonies, but we learn something new every day.
The
1st fold of our flag is a symbol of life.
The
2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.
The
3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing
our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to
attain peace throughout the world.
The
4th fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens
trusting in God, it is him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war
for His divine guidance.
The
5th fold is a tribute to our county, for the words of Stephen
Decatur, “Our County, in dealing with other countries may she always be right,
but it is still our country, right or wrong”.
The
6th fold is for where our hearts lie. It is our hearts that we pledge allegiance to
the flag of the
The
7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the
Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies,
whether they are found within or without the boundaries of our republic.
The
8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the
shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.
The
9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers. For it has been through their faith, their
love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and woman who have
made this country great has been molded.
The
10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he too, has given his sons
and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.
The
11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and
King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and
Jacob.
The
12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the
Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
The
13th fold or where the flag is completely folded, the stars are
uppermost reminding us of our nation’s motto, “In God We Trust”.
After the flag is completely
folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever
reminding us of the Soldiers who served under General George Washington, and
Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed
by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States,
preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.
There
are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the
future, you’ll see flags folded and now you will know why.
Please
share this with others who love the symbol of “

Evidently
there has been some confusion in regard to the information provided in the June
to July 2004 Newsletter under the **Notice Section in regard to the Posting of
the Newsletter on the Post 175 WEB Site on the Internet and continuing to
provide individual hard copies of the Newsletter. The following clarification
is provided to make it clear what we are proposing.
If
you use a Personal Computer with access to the Internet you can access the Post
175 Internet WEB Site (http://www.legionpost175.org) to view and
print a hard copy of the current Newsletter, which is always posted on the 1st
of the month of each issue.
An
advantage to having access to the Post 175 WEB Site on the Internet is that you
can also access past Newsletters in the event that you misplaced an old
Newsletter and wanted to review a previous article.
An
additional advantage is that some of you have informed us that you didn’t
receive a copy of the Newsletter in the mail, and/or, that you received it late
and missed a planned event. Once the Newsletters have been delivered to the
Post Office we can’t control the delivery of Bulk Mail. Therefore, if you use
the Internet to access the Post WEB Site you will no longer have to worry about
receiving the Newsletter late and possibly miss an event that you were
interested in.
The
bottom line, in order to save money, is that we are asking our members
who have access to the Internet to help us out by viewing and printing the
Newsletter via the Internet and to send us an E-mail stating that you Do Not require a hard copy of
the
Newsletter
mailed to you. Please send the
E-mail
to the following e-mail address: newsletter@legionpost175.org and include in
the subject line Attention Newsletter Editor.
For the
members who do not have Internet access we will continue to mail hard copies of
the Newsletter to your address of record.
Note: It is up to each member to
keep us informed of all address changes. Address changes can be submitted to
the Editor via the Internet using
the newsletter@legionpost175.org E-mail address, or
mailed to the Post address listed at the beginning of the Newsletter. Please
indicate on the front of the envelope "ATTN: Editor".
Thanks,

News from our Auxiliary
The Post Appreciation Dinner on June 26th went over
very well. Roni Goughenour and helpers
Rosemary Gurick and Michele Jordan cooked a great dinner. Kathy Beall tended bar. Rene Bachman was awarded a plaque and flowers
from the Auxiliary for her years of service as Membership Chairman and given
recognition from the Post as well. She received a standing ovation from
everyone there. Thank you to the Post
and “Buddy” George for bringing back the idea of a recognition dinner for the
volunteers. It was much appreciated.
Congratulations to Pat
Kloes who was honored by our unit at the May 26th meeting with an
Honorary Life Membership. She joins Fay
Higgins, Rene Bachman, Barbara Mallonee, and Betty Gentile who also hold this
special title.
We will be doing another
Initiation Ceremony for all those who never received their Auxiliary pins. You
will be notified in the newsletter and given a cut off date to reply to so that
we know how many pins to order. Anyone
who has never received their pin may participate.
The Breakfast Crew did an
exemplary job of feeding one hundred seventy-six people for the June Father’s
Day special, the highest attendance ever!
Thank you all for a great job!
The Fourth of July Parade
was hot, but fun. Thanks to Ed Jessilonis,
John Fuller, and Larry Doran for the use of their cars and Roni Goughenour and
John and Paula Fuller for driving. Bob Martin, who filled in for Commander Dan
and Mike Clutz rode together in the lead car behind Jim Corkery who dressed as
“Uncle Sam” and walked the entire parade route!

Poppies
What a success our annual poppy
drive was! The total donations amounted
to $1128.41. Your generosity was greatly appreciated.
The program started out with the
traditional poppy dedication displays in the lounge. This began on May 1st, which is
the start of “Poppy Month”.
The Memorial Day service was
held inside due to inclement weather with almost 100 people attending. Many more donations were received just before
the service. The Auxiliary served a wonderful luncheon after the service.
Now it was time for those who
volunteered to hit the local grocery stores and highways to collect more
donations. Dan McDonald and Pat Kloes
manned the
As always, I look forward to an
even more successful program next year!!

The “Breakfast Crew” deserves a standing ovation for
the service they provided at the last breakfast on Father’s Day. They did an outstanding job serving a record
176 people!! (And everyone got all they wanted to eat.) We usually serve around 100—way to go,
“Crew”!
The breakfast will resume on Sunday, September 19th. That’s the good news. Not so good is the fact that due to the
ever-increasing cost to provide the best quality fare, we must raise the price
to $6.00 for adults (still an extra $.50 for an omelet made to order). The cost for children 7 and under remains the
same $3.00.
We appreciate your support and look forward to
providing you with the best darn breakfast for the most reasonable price we can
afford.
Have a great summer.
See you in September.
Pat Kloes and the “Breakfast Crew”.

help; hope to be again this year. Please contact me, Paula Fuller, at
