Message From Your Commander

Editors note:

Due to the passing of a family member the Commander’s message will not appear in this issue. Dan assures me he is looking forward to the coming year as the Post 175 Commander.  He also welcomes any assistance that the membership can lend him in making it a very successful year. Look to the next issue for some of Dan’s plans for the upcoming year.

Message From the 1st Vice

As I tackle the membership job this year I am looking forward to the difficult challenge of obtaining FOUR STAR STATUS for the Post and our Commander. I will be doing everything within my abilities to accomplish this task, but the ultimate outcome will be from you the membership. There is no telling how many members we will lose to Post Everlasting, minimal I hope, but these members must be replaced and even more recruited if we are to obtain our goal of Four Stars, therefore this year we will need to reach a membership of 632 to accomplish this high honor, but I know with your help and my constant reminders it will be done. THINK-RECRUIT-RECRUIT-RECRUIT. WE ARE THE FINEST MILITARY ORGANIZATION IN TOWN.

Let’s not forget the EARLY BIRD BULL AND OYSTER ROAST this year. It will be held on Saturday the 13th of November from 1PM Until 6PM. Tickets will go on sale September the 15th to Legion Early Bird Members until 1 October, then they will be sold on a first come first serve basis. Hope to see you there.

The following is a little Poem I picked up from a newspaper in Kentucky.

“Volunteer heaven”

Many will be shocked to find,

When the day of judgment nears,

That there is a special place in heaven

Set aside for volunteers,

Furnished with big recliners,

Satin couches, and footstools,

Where there are no committee chairs,

No group leaders, no carpools,

Telephone lists will be outlawed,

But a finger snap will bring

Cool drinks and gourmet dinners

And rare feasts fit for a King.

You ask, who will serve these privileged few

And work for all they’re worth?

Why, all those who reaped the benefits and not once volunteered on Earth!

Volunteers are the Lifeline of our organization

Step up and be known. Its Not A Job-It’s an honor.

Carl “Buddy” George

1st Vice Commander

Message From the Chaplain

Fellow Legionnaires, I’m sorry to report comrades Edwin J Sadowski, Sr, James L Goossen, Raymond L Fairley, Edward Beattie, and Leo H Kueberth, Sr have been called to Post Everlasting since our last newsletter.  Please remember these fallen comrades and their families in your prayers.

The need for blood remains urgent.  The next blood drive is Monday, 27 September 2004.  Please put that date on your calendar.  If you can’t give, perhaps family members, friends, or business associates can.  Every pint of blood given can benefit up to three people in need of life saving plasma, platelets, or serum.   Please give the gift of life by signing up on the bulletin board near the front door.  Give until it helps.

We will never forget!  September 11, 2001 changed the course of our lives and of America.  We will remember the terrible events of that day, honor those whose lives were taken, and salute those who now defend our country against new enemies, on Saturday, September 11, at 12 noon.  Please plan on coming to our Post Home to participate in this meaningful and moving ceremony.  A light lunch will follow.

I hope all of you and your families have a safe and happy summer.  Enjoy Labor Day.

Please let me know of anyone in the hospital or ill at home.  Thanks.

Chaplain

Message From the Historian

"Our Flag: Did you know?"

Have you ever noticed the honor guard pays meticulous attention to correctly folding the American flag 13 times? You probably thought it was to symbolize the 13 colonies, but we learn something new every day.

The 1st fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

The 2nd fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

The 3rd fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.

The 4th fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting in God, it is him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance.

The 5th fold is a tribute to our county, for the words of Stephen Decatur, “Our County, in dealing with other countries may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong”.

The 6th fold is for where our hearts lie.  It is our hearts that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.

The 7th fold is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all her enemies, whether they are found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The 8th fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day.

The 9th fold is a tribute to womanhood, and Mothers.  For it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and woman who have made this country great has been molded.

The 10th fold is a tribute to the father, for he too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies in the Hebrews eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in the Christians eyes, God the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.

The 13th fold or where the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our nation’s motto, “In God We Trust”.

After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the Soldiers who served under General George Washington, and Sailors and Marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges and freedoms we enjoy today.

There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have deep meaning. In the future, you’ll see flags folded and now you will know why.

Please share this with others who love the symbol of “Liberty and Freedom”.

Message From the Editor

Evidently there has been some confusion in regard to the information provided in the June to July 2004 Newsletter under the **Notice Section in regard to the Posting of the Newsletter on the Post 175 WEB Site on the Internet and continuing to provide individual hard copies of the Newsletter. The following clarification is provided to make it clear what we are proposing.

If you use a Personal Computer with access to the Internet you can access the Post 175 Internet WEB Site (http://www.legionpost175.org) to view and print a hard copy of the current Newsletter, which is always posted on the 1st of the month of each issue.

An advantage to having access to the Post 175 WEB Site on the Internet is that you can also access past Newsletters in the event that you misplaced an old Newsletter and wanted to review a previous article.

An additional advantage is that some of you have informed us that you didn’t receive a copy of the Newsletter in the mail, and/or, that you received it late and missed a planned event. Once the Newsletters have been delivered to the Post Office we can’t control the delivery of Bulk Mail. Therefore, if you use the Internet to access the Post WEB Site you will no longer have to worry about receiving the Newsletter late and possibly miss an event that you were interested in.

The bottom line, in order to save money, is that we are asking our members who have access to the Internet to help us out by viewing and printing the Newsletter via the Internet and to send us an E-mail stating that you Do Not require a hard copy of the

Newsletter mailed to you. Please send the

E-mail to the following e-mail address: newsletter@legionpost175.org and include in the subject line Attention Newsletter Editor.

For the members who do not have Internet access we will continue to mail hard copies of the Newsletter to your address of record.

Note: It is up to each member to keep us informed of all address changes. Address changes can be submitted to the Editor via the Internet using

the newsletter@legionpost175.org E-mail address, or mailed to the Post address listed at the beginning of the Newsletter. Please indicate on the front of the envelope "ATTN: Editor".

Thanks,

News from our Auxiliary

From the President

Congratulations to the Auxiliary Officers for the year 2004-2005 including our new Executive Committee:  Sue Connor, Linda Freedenburg, and Pat Wachter. Peggy Williams is a new addition to the list of officers and Roni Goughenour has accepted the position of Catering Chairman.

Betty Gentile has graciously agreed to fill in for the Chaplain’s job. However, we need a full time Chaplain. The job consists of sending out birthday, sympathy, get well, and thinking of you cards; reading the Opening and Closing Prayers at meetings; and participating in Funeral Services of our deceased members.  Please call me at 410-544-2421 if you are interested.

The Americanism Essay Awards Ceremony on June 6th was well attended.  Delegate Leopold and Commander “Buddy” George addressed the audience and their remarks were well received. The children read their essays and received their awards. Thank you Alice Martin for a job well done.

The Post Appreciation Dinner on June 26th went over very well.   Roni Goughenour and helpers Rosemary Gurick and Michele Jordan cooked a great dinner.  Kathy Beall tended bar.  Rene Bachman was awarded a plaque and flowers from the Auxiliary for her years of service as Membership Chairman and given recognition from the Post as well. She received a standing ovation from everyone there.  Thank you to the Post and “Buddy” George for bringing back the idea of a recognition dinner for the volunteers.  It was much appreciated.

Congratulations to Pat Kloes who was honored by our unit at the May 26th meeting with an Honorary Life Membership.  She joins Fay Higgins, Rene Bachman, Barbara Mallonee, and Betty Gentile who also hold this special title.

We will be doing another Initiation Ceremony for all those who never received their Auxiliary pins. You will be notified in the newsletter and given a cut off date to reply to so that we know how many pins to order.  Anyone who has never received their pin may participate.

The Breakfast Crew did an exemplary job of feeding one hundred seventy-six people for the June Father’s Day special, the highest attendance ever!  Thank you all for a great job!

The Fourth of July Parade was hot, but fun.  Thanks to Ed Jessilonis, John Fuller, and Larry Doran for the use of their cars and Roni Goughenour and John and Paula Fuller for driving. Bob Martin, who filled in for Commander Dan and Mike Clutz rode together in the lead car behind Jim Corkery who dressed as “Uncle Sam” and walked the entire parade route!  Juniors Jackie, Brittany, and Courtney Jones all participated carrying the Post banner and riding along.

Betty Gentile, Phyllis Gordon, Fay Higgins, Betty Kline, Barbara Mallonee, and myself attended the 83rd State Convention in Ocean City, Md the week of July 19th.  Betty Gentile sang in the Glee Club.  Betty Kline and Barbara Mallonee carried our flags for the Unit at the opening and closing sessions.

Our Unit was awarded two Certificates of Merit from Department:  3rd Place for “Best All Around Field Service Program (units 206 to 335 members)” and 2nd Place for “History—Best History for the Year”.  Congratulations Barbara Mallonee and Eva D’Ambrosio!

Another “Thank You” to Paula Fuller and helpers Bobbie Bishop and Patti Jo Smith for doing a thorough cleaning of the ladies and the men’s room adjoining the lounge. We appreciate it.

Don’t forget the SAL Crab Feast on September 25th.  We will be calling for cakes for the Cake Wheel and encourage your support of this event.

Please remember our service men and women all over the world. Their safe return is ever in our thoughts and prayers.

Pat Rabeau

President

Poppies

What a success our annual poppy drive was!  The total donations amounted to $1128.41. Your generosity was greatly appreciated.

The program started out with the traditional poppy dedication displays in the lounge.  This began on May 1st, which is the start of “Poppy Month”.

The Memorial Day service was held inside due to inclement weather with almost 100 people attending.  Many more donations were received just before the service. The Auxiliary served a wonderful luncheon after the service.

Now it was time for those who volunteered to hit the local grocery stores and highways to collect more donations.  Dan McDonald and Pat Kloes manned the College Parkway intersection.  Barbara Mallonee covered the Annapolis commissary.  Dave Cantler and Dave Sersevic collected donations at Gaul’s in Annapolis.  Carl (Buddy) George and Jerry Heath covered the Giant in Severna Park. Thanks again to everyone that helped to make this years Poppy Drive such a financially rewarding event.

As always, I look forward to an even more successful program next year!!

Eva D’Ambrosio

Chairman

Breakfast

The “Breakfast Crew” deserves a standing ovation for the service they provided at the last breakfast on Father’s Day.  They did an outstanding job serving a record 176 people!! (And everyone got all they wanted to eat.)  We usually serve around 100—way to go, “Crew”!

The breakfast will resume on Sunday, September 19th.  That’s the good news.  Not so good is the fact that due to the ever-increasing cost to provide the best quality fare, we must raise the price to $6.00 for adults (still an extra $.50 for an omelet made to order).  The cost for children 7 and under remains the same $3.00.

We appreciate your support and look forward to providing you with the best darn breakfast for the most reasonable price we can afford.

Have a great summer.  See you in September.

Pat Kloes and the “Breakfast Crew”.

Souper Sunday

We will soon be coming upon football season in October and November and that means food on Sunday afternoons.  We will be making some changes to the menu and the prices that we think you will like.

I’ll be putting a volunteer list up on the lounge bulletin board soon.  We were successful last year and with your help; hope to be again this year. Please contact me, Paula Fuller, at 410-271-3394.

Go Ravens!

Congratulations to Ravens Roost #33 for winning the “Presidents Award” at their convention this past June.  The award is “Presented To The Ravens Roost That Has Exhibited The Best Roost Spirit And Unity”.

Ravens Roost #33, which meets at the Post, invites

Post members who are football fans to join the Roost.  It is one of 50 Roosts that work together to promote football and local charities in addition to cheering for the Ravens.  Roost members have fun watching the games, but we enjoy other activities throughout the year.   We hold our annual convention in Ocean City.  In February, members participate in a bull roast that is attended by Brian Billick and Ravens players.  Membership dues are $15.00 per year plus a $15.00 Initiation fee.  For more information, please call Dave Schultz at 410-757-5505 or Lil Ellis at 410-757-7924.

NEED SOME FLORIDA SUNSHINE?

The Severn River Lions Club, a service organization, sells select Florida citrus each month from November through April.  All proceeds of the sales go to charities and school scholarships.  The club offers premium fruit shipped directly from the orchards to Severna Park.  Ruby Red grapefruit is offered each month.  In December navel oranges and tangerines are also available.  In January, Temple oranges are offered.  Frequently navel oranges are also available in January.  Grapefruit costs $10 for a 2/5 bushel box and $18 for a 4/5 bushel box.  Navel oranges run $11 for 2/5 bushel and $20 for 4/5 bushel.  Cost of tangerines and Temple oranges is not yet available.  If you are interested in enjoying some Florida sunshine right here in Severna Park this winter while contributing to charity, call Dale Strait at 410-987-4879.  Thanks.
